Chapter 3 – Basic Requirements
Though anyone can decide to go into modelling, there are still some basic or core requirements needed, since the industry is quite fussy on who represents its products. As such, your body must fit into industry-imposed standards.
When compared to the women, male models usually start out between 18 – 25 years of age. No-one is on the lookout for a baby-faced model since male models are usually older than females. Also, as opposed to most women, male models will be able to get work well into their 30s. The average height for male models is between 5′ – 6’2″.
Female models have even stricter guidelines to follow. However, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact size and shape that is expected because many agencies have different qualifications than others. In general, it is expected that a model be between 5’9 and 5’11, but occasionally women who are on the fringe of this range; 5’8 to 6’; are also able to break into the modelling world.
When it comes to weight, it is important that your weight is proportionate to your height. Typically, models weigh between 108 lbs and 130 lbs, depending on their height. Dress sizes range between 6 and 8, but much smaller requirements are often expected in the modelling world. While many agencies have a desired figure of around 34B – 24 – 34, it is usually expected that a model has a waistline no larger than 25” with a maximum hip size of 35 ½”.
How to measure body size?
It is also important that you have the ‘model look’ as well. Agencies will be looking for a woman that has a long, graceful, swanlike neck as well as a square jaw and cheek bones that are high and strong. It is best that the eyes are wide set, shaped like almonds, and have thick eyelashes.
The beauty of your skin is also an important factor as well and if you have a lot of acne or acne scars, then you might want to consider another career outside modelling. You should also not have any scars, tattoos or piercings. Your lips will be expected to be medium to full and your teeth should be straight and white. You will also be expected to have a good posture as well as shoulders that are broad and squared. Models most commonly have a long legged look as well and are able to carry themselves gracefully. Hair is the final touch and it should be healthy and in terrific condition.
Having a great deal of self-confidence is also a must when you are looking to become a model. You should also be responsible and flexible with your time. Working on a tight schedule is often something that models must do. Relocation and traveling to other cities is also a requirement for models and you should consider the time that this will take out of your schedule. Finally, thick skin is a must in this industry and you will need to able to handle the pressures of being rejected every once in a while.
